  •  WSP achieved gross profit of $23.0m, up +64.9%. Gross margin declined from 60.4% to 58.4% due to a surge in transactional revenues, which grew from 66.6% to 80.6% of total revenue. 
  • Operating expenses jumped +75.0% to $29.9m, as WSP grew head count from 169 to 270 to service the growing business. 
  •  WSP reported an EBITDA loss of $(4.6)m versus $(1.8)m in the pcp. 
  •  WSP remains well-funded, with no debt and line of sight to cash flow breakeven.

Revised Tax Expectations Nudge Cooper’s FVE Upward

Business Strategy and Outlook

As a cash-pay business with sticky customers and few competitors, the contact lens industry is an attractive market, in our opinion. Four players (Johnson & Johnson, Alcon, Cooper, and Bausch Health) dominate the global market, and industry regulation creates strong barriers to entry, keeping new entrants away. Cooper’s surgical segment has contributed approximately one fourth of total revenue since 2018, following the acquisition of Paragard, a nonhormonal copper intrauterine device.

Though Paragard sales dropped during the COVID-19 pandemic, its believe that the product is well positioned to benefit from secular trends toward increased adoption of IUDs in the U.S. IUD usage rate to mirror the rate in other developed countries, leading to market saturation and a slowdown in segment revenue growth. 

Financial Strength

Cooper is in solid financial strength. While the company took on $1.4 billion in debt in fiscal 2018 to acquire Teva’s Paragard IUD, its vision and surgical segments should generate enough cash to allow the company to pay down debt and continue investing in its businesses. Historically, Cooper had no trouble paying down debt, with debt/EBITDA down from 3.1 in fiscal 2014 to 1.9 times by the end of fiscal 2017. Even with the large acquisition and significant upticks in COVID-19-related costs, the firm ended 2020 with debt about 3 times EBITDA. 

The contact lens market is already very consolidated, especially after the Sauflon acquisition, so future large acquisitions seem unlikely for CooperVision, but the firm may seek additional capital to pursue bolt-on deals in its surgical division. CooperSurgical has acquired about 40 companies since 1990, and we project this trend to continue. Cooper has spent $1.1 billion and $1.9 billion on acquisitions over the past five and 10 years, respectively.

Bulls Say’s 

  • CooperVision will benefit as customers trade up from weekly or monthly contact lenses to more expensive daily lenses. 
  • Paragard is the only nonhormonal IUD approved in the U.S. and does not have any serious competition. 
  • MiSight has first-mover advantage in a fast-growing market with a multibillion-dollar market potential.

Company Profile 

Cooper Companies operates two units: CooperVision and CooperSurgical. Accounting for approximately 75% of total sales, CooperVision is the the second-largest player in the oligopolistic contact lens market. Over 50% of CooperVision’s sales are in international territories. The second unit, CooperSurgical, develops and manufactures diagnostic and surgical products for gynecologists and obstetricians, including the Paragard IUD, which Cooper acquired from Teva in 2017.

NextDC is well-placed to benefit from industry megatrends, including the growing adoption of cloud computing, the Internet of Things, and artificial intelligence, leading to exponential growth in data creation. As per Morningstar analyst forecast NextDC will materially expand its capacity over our 10-year forecast period in order to meet growing demand for data center services. 

The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the digital transformation of many businesses and expedited demand for co-location data centers. Large numbers of employees have made the transition to remote working arrangements, leading to a greater reliance on digital technologies such as video conferencing and cloud-based platforms, and reducing the need to store servers at a centralized location. Beyond the COVID-19 pandemic, it is expected that remote working levels will remain elevated above pre-pandemic levels, resulting in continued demand for digital technologies and potentially less need for physical office space. This shift has increased demand for data centers and hybrid and multi cloud data storage solutions, which are supported by co-location data centers like NextDC. Hybrid solutions, which combine traditional infrastructure with cloud storage, can improve business outcomes through reduced latency and costs, increased security and resilience, and the flexibility to connect to multiple clouds based on business needs. These solutions provide greater flexibility and allow businesses to scale their data storage capacity based on workflow. 

As per Morningstar analyst, interconnection services are becoming increasingly important for NextDC as more businesses make the transition to hybrid cloud storage models. As of fiscal 2021, interconnection revenue contributed 8% of NextDC’s total recurring revenue and this will trend higher over time as its network ecosystem matures.

Financial Strength

NextDC is in sound financial health. The company raised AUD 862 million in fiscal 2020 via an institutional placement and share purchase plan. Proceeds from the equity raising will be used to fund the development of a third Sydney data center and further capacity expansion at its existing and new sites. Morningstar analyst forecast, gearing, measured as net debt/EBITDA, to deteriorate to above 3.6 times in fiscal 2023 as NextDC continues to invest heavily in portfolio expansion, before recovering from fiscal 2024 as capacity utilization improves. Morningstar analyst forecasted that NextDC will invest about AUD 4.0 billion during the 10 years to fiscal 2031 to grow total power capacity at a CAGR of 16%. It is also expected that NextDC will only consider paying dividends when it has accrued sufficient franking credits, otherwise the capital would be better spent on investments or repaying debt.

Investment Thesis:

Tradeweb benefits from long-term tailwinds as bond markets become increasingly electronic

which tend to focus on a particular bond type or market segment, Tradeweb operates with a broad scope, offering trading in just about anything related to fixed income, including derivatives, as well as some equity exchange-traded funds. That said, Tradeweb’s interest-rate and credit segments are the heart of the company, making up 77% of its revenue in 2020, and are responsible for much of its growth.

Fixed-income markets globally are increasingly moving away from voice-negotiated trading toward electronic platforms because the liquidity and workflow enhancement of these electronic networks promise to lower implicit and explicit trading costs for increasingly expense-conscious firms. Tradeweb has been a major beneficiary of this trend, as its largest competitor is the implicit competition represented by traditional voice-based trading.
